Leaving a Note for Your Future Self
A short note that makes a decision today understandable to you later.
- recording
- notes
- judgment

We solve the same problem several times over. There was a similar conflict half a year ago, you reached a decision after the same kind of thinking, and once time has passed the reason for that decision blurs. So you hesitate again in the same place.
Leaving a note for your future self reduces that repetition. It does not have to be grand. On the day you decide, write down three things: what you decided, why you decided it that way, and what conditions would make you look at it again. Three lines are enough.
A note is a map, not an excuse
A note like this is not self-justification. It is a map of your judgment. If what information you had at the time and what you put first are recorded, later you can make better decisions. Even if that judgment was wrong, knowing why it was wrong changes the next one.
This works especially well for decisions where people and work are tangled. Relationships change in interpretation as time passes. Something that made sense then may not make sense later, and the reverse is also true. If the record from that time exists, the facts do not wobble even when your interpretation does.
Where to keep them
Anywhere is fine to keep them. What matters is choosing one place and keeping to it. Whether a notes app or paper, make one spot where only decision notes gather. And once every six months, take the time to look back through them.
Your future self may not be wiser than you are now. They will just not remember you. That is why the note is needed.
